VHr-10 gHouse

A lantern floating in the trees.

This house was conceived as a prototype for guesthouses on Martha’s Vineyard. The design poetically synthesizes and optimizes the restrictive zoning envelope, contemporary building techniques combined with conventional building systems, and high-performance climatic design strategies, creating an alternative to the ubiquitous Cape design. The concrete base of the structure was formed using oriented strand board (recycled wood chips made into 4’x8’ sheets). This provides a unique leaf-like texture to the concrete surface. The forms are repurposed as the roof slope under the green roof. The wood box perched on the concrete walk-out level is constructed from Structurally Insulated Panels (SIPs) that were cut off the island, ferried over, and assembled in three days. Cladding the highly insulated structure are forest-certified mahogany deck boards that provide shade and protection from storms. The roof is clad in a four-inch deep green roof comprised of nine succulents requiring no water or weeding. A drawing made from a photograph of the shadow of the Japanese Maple tree in the yard is cut into wood ceiling panels for the primary bedroom that, when lit from above, create dappled light in the space.
