Vertical Horizon
A stone prism for viewing up the mountain and across the valley.
The Vertical Horizon House is a stone prism with a trapezoidal shape in both the plan and section. The monolithic form is hollowed out to create an ascending path through the center of the house that provides automobile access to a hidden five-car garage, terminating in a vertically framed view of the top of the mountain that makes up the property's northern edge. Floating above the southern edge of the house is a long horizontal window wall that provides wide, expansive views of the valley and city lights beyond. The east and west facades have deep cuts that block the low morning and afternoon sun. North and south ends of the house are entire glass walls that extend the interior landscape into the desert and beyond.
