Stripscape
Volumes of light shading and illuminating the street.
A new typology of pedestrian amenities along the 7th Avenue corridor in the Melrose Neighborhood. Inspired by the billboards that litter the strip, new horizontal illuminated shading signs called ‘Lampshades’ are deployed strategically, forming bus stops, pedestrian crosswalk shading, and display areas along the commercial corridor. Built by the City of Phoenix and maintained by the Seventh Avenue Merchants Association (SAMA), these new desert city amenities create an identity for the neighborhood. The Lampshades are paired with illuminated art panels that change annually via competition among local artists. These panels provide horizontal shade for early morning and late afternoon sun. Coupled with the art panels are vertical vine screens that also provide horizontal shade and a micro-climate created through evapotranspiration. Combined, these new pedestrian infrastructures provide amenities in the form of shade, display, and gathering on an otherwise car-centric landscape.
