Stone Shadow
Glass prisms cradled by stone monoliths.
The house is nestled into the side of Echo Canyon on the northwest face of Camelback Mountain. Built from the stone of the site, the base of the house is literally and figuratively grounded into the site creating a series of stone cradles that hold seamless glass volumes off the terrain. The high rock face acts as a natural protection, shielding the home from the extreme west desert sun, affording unprotected glass volumes in an otherwise intense context. The four glass prisms project the primary bedroom, guest bedrooms, and main living and dining spaces to the landscape. Following the slope of the terrain, the entry is hidden from the street masking the scale of the mountain. Upon entering the house, the elevated glass prism called the “Lens” explodes the living space into the monumental rock face revealing the dramatic scale of the site. The Stone Shadow House sits in the shadow of the stone, capturing the beauty of the site while symbiotically being protected by its overshadowing scale it becomes part of the mountain.
