Stone Cloud

A shadow anchored to a carved stone plinth.

This hillside house is on the east side of Camelback Mountain in Phoenix, Arizona. The rocky terrain is mimicked by a series of carved stone walls that connect the hillside ‘grotto’ landscape through the living, dining, and kitchen with the stone plinth of the pool deck. As if naturally eroded, the monolithic quality of this stone level creates an anchored space flanked by thirty-foot sliding glass panels, allowing the mountain landscape to seamlessly move through the house out to the pool and view beyond. Floating above this stone landscape is a dark mass that shades the lower level while providing a twenty-four-foot-high interior space connecting the private program of the house with the public space below. Unlike most hillside houses, the uphill side of the home has a carved exterior grotto-like landscape with a water feature, fire pit, and integrated spa. This more intimate landscape flanks the main living space, juxtaposing to the 180º views on the other side.
