Shadow Fold

Stone drapery enveloping glass grottos.

The house captures the full value of the lot by optimizing its envelope within one foot of the zoning FAR. Additionally, a subterranean garage creates parking for four cars, a gym/guest room, and mechanical rooms for all of the house infrastructure, thereby liberating the upper level for dwelling only. The house is positioned to capture views of Camelback Mountain with a large central courtyard around which the rooms are organized. The exterior cladding of the house is made of custom glass-reinforced concrete panels organized in a randomized pattern, creating an illusion of a concrete drapery or fluted ribs of a saguaro cactus. The public street elevation floats over horizontal boxes of plantings, with one frosted glass opening for the entry and a subterranean garage ramp. Other openings in the drapery for bedrooms are clad in white glass, and sliding glass panels open to the landscape of the courtyard. The Shadow Fold House's simple form and complex surface belies the transparency of the interiors’ relationship to the landscape.
