Monk View
A thin folded plane floating over a stone plinth
The house is located on the north face of Camelback Mountain, with 270-degree views from the south, west, and north. This expansive visual connection to the mountain and valley dictated the open landscape strategy for the house's design. A black concrete masonry plinth emerges from the sloped site creating a level ground for the interior/exterior dwelling landscape. The surface of the plinth is manipulated in sections, creating a topography for occupation. Protecting this landscape is a large knife-edged roof plane that precisely follows the shape of the plinth. To capture significant views up the mountain to the south, the Praying Monk rock feature to the west, and Mummy Mountain to the North sections of the roof are folded up toward the views to connect the landscape to the greater context of the site. While the plinth grounds the house to the mountain, the roof hangs from the sky creating a middle landscape between these two worlds.
