Mesa BRT

A diaphanous scrim hung from a lantern

The Mesa Bus Rapid Transit shelter solves the problem of deploying 26 structures within the narrow right-of-way of most city streets. This constraint combined with the necessity for safety and accessibility led to a structural support strategy that hangs the shelter on a cantilevered steel bracket that has only two points of contact with the ground. An innovative new shade screen, constructed out of fiberglass is designed to optimize view while providing shade from the low afternoon sun is both hung from the support structure and laid horizontally to provide more overhead shade. The tectonics are analogous to the layered structures found in traditional Japanese architecture. Each independent system relies on the next to provide a composition that appears light and airy.
