Event Horizon

The horizon carved in stone.

The house is located in an equestrian neighborhood in the Town of Paradise Valley. Conceived as a modern ranch, the main house is set deep into the property, capturing the full view of Camelback Mountain. A small stable designed to transform into a guest house is located on the site's southern edge, framing a corral for horses. The house's structure is comprised almost entirely of white sandblasted masonry and smooth ground-face masonry in the bathrooms. A 110-foot knife-edge canopy across the entire east elevation creates a shaded view aperture to the entire property and the mountain beyond. Massive glass panels create a seamless boundary between the exterior living and the interior. Furthering this illusion, the kitchen is comprised of three boxes. A wood box stores the equipment and pantry, a metal box holds the sink and storage, and a white box island supports the cooktop and bar seating. These three objects float between the dining room and the living room. The Event Horizon House is a new ranch typology synthesizing indoor/outdoor quality of modern living with an equestrian program in the middle of a desert city.
