Aperture

Four stone portals into the landscape

This transformation of an existing 3,400 sq/ft. patio home deploys four black basalt stone apertures strategically inserted into the house's shell as entry, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom volumes. Each aperture frames the landscape, shields the sun, and extends the interior program into the landscape. Removing the existing drywall ceiling revealed a wood ceiling that is sandblasted and stained to match the walnut built-in furniture and Bulthaup kitchen wall. The Kitchen now opens into the main living space and is defined by a sixteen-foot-long stainless steel and aluminum island that provides the counter in front of a concealed wall of appliances and storage. Custom black basalt floor slabs are cut to fit the module of the existing roof structure and carried outside through the new glass facade connecting the interior with the patio and pool. To increase the perceptual scale of the patio, a new ‘wet-edge’ pool and spa creates a continuous surface from the white concrete pool deck across the water to the landscape. The original front doors of the house are repurposed (cleaned, re-stained, and attached) to form a new barndoor for the primary bedroom. These tactical interventions create a true patio home where the patio extends the interior living spaces expanding the spatial experience of the house.
